Vigil for Dion Johnson

On May 29, 2020, a group of nearly 1,000 community members held a vigil in solidarity and in sorrow for Dion Johnson’s family. The vigil was organized by BLM Metro Phoenix four days after Dion was killed in his car where he was sleeping by Arizona DPS trooper George Cervantes. After the gathering, community members of their own volition went on to march to protest and rally outside of the police station in the heart of downtown Phoenix. | As of August 1, Cervantes is still employed by DPS and was put on administrative leave. He previously had records of abuse having tased his own dog and for threatening a woman he was in a relationship with. In 2018, City Councilman Sal DiCiccio was quoted in the NYTimes saying that the police force in Phoenix weren't the issue, but the community was to blame. #blacklivesmatter #justicefordion
